Technical SEO Basics Every Website Owner Should Know

You do not need to be a developer to understand technical SEO. These basics help search engines crawl, understand and rank your site.

Great content can only rank if search engines can find, read and understand it. Technical SEO covers the foundations that make this possible.

Crawling and indexing

Search engines use automated crawlers to discover pages. Make sure important pages are linked from your menu or other pages, and check Google Search Console to see which pages are indexed.

XML sitemap

A sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to know about. Submit it in Google Search Console and keep it updated automatically as you add pages.

Robots.txt

This small file tells crawlers which areas to avoid, such as admin pages. Be careful: a single wrong line can block your whole site from search.

Page speed and Core Web Vitals

Fast pages give a better experience and are favoured in search. Compress images, limit heavy scripts and use good hosting.

Mobile-friendly design

Most searches happen on phones. Your site should be easy to read and use on small screens without zooming.

HTTPS

A secure connection protects visitors and is expected by browsers and search engines. Make sure every page loads over HTTPS.

Clean URLs and titles

  • Use short, descriptive URLs
  • Give every page a unique title and meta description
  • Use one clear H1 heading per page

Structured data

Structured data, also called schema markup, helps search engines understand details such as your business address, services, FAQs and articles.

Fix errors regularly

Check Search Console for broken pages, redirect issues and indexing problems every month.

Every website DigiQuest builds includes these technical SEO foundations. If you are unsure about your current site, ask us for a technical SEO check.
