What Makes a Business Website Fast (and Why Speed Matters)
Slow pages lose visitors and enquiries. Learn what affects website speed, how to measure it and the simple fixes that make the biggest difference.

Most people browse on their phones, often on mobile data. If your website takes too long to load, many visitors leave before they see what you offer. Speed also affects how search engines judge the quality of your pages.
How to measure speed
Google's PageSpeed Insights is a free tool that tests any page and reports Core Web Vitals. These measure how quickly the main content appears, how soon the page responds to taps and whether the layout jumps around while loading.
The most common causes of slow websites
- Large images that are not compressed or resized
- Too many plugins or third-party scripts
- Slow or overloaded hosting
- Heavy fonts and animations loaded on every page
- No caching, so every visit rebuilds the page from scratch
Quick wins
Start with images, because they are usually the biggest files. Use modern formats such as WebP, resize photos to the size they are displayed at and lazy-load images further down the page. Remove plugins and tracking scripts you no longer use.
Build for speed from the start
Modern frameworks such as Next.js render pages on the server, split code automatically and optimise images. Combined with good hosting and a content delivery network, this gives fast results without constant tuning.
Speed is a habit, not a one-time fix
Every new banner, video or plugin can slow a site down again. Check your key pages every few months and treat speed as part of regular maintenance.
DigiQuest builds websites with performance in mind from the first line of code. If your current site feels slow, we can run a free speed review and tell you what to fix first.
